City of Venice

The Council of Venice has commissioned an illustrated logo that represents the spirit of the city. While the design can take any form, it must reflect Venice’s identity in a way that appeals to both visitors and local citizens.

The goal is to attract a wider audience—travelers of all ages who seek meaningful experiences—while also creating a design that Venetians feel proud of.

We are encouraged to explore different aspects of Venice through illustration, with regular feedback from the client to refine the concept.

Key guidelines:

  • The logo must be simple, timeless, and memorable

  • Use a maximum of three colors (plus black and white versions)

  • Optional text is limited to the word “Venice” only

  • The style and concept should represent the city

Research

  • Venice is unique in its environment, architecture, and history. With no suburban sprawl, the city relies on boats and gondolas for transport. Its narrow, winding streets add to the charm—but it’s easy to get lost along the way.

  • The Venetian flag features red and gold—colors rooted in Roman and Byzantine heritage, and later used by the Venetian navy and military. Though these dominate the flag, Venice's official colors are actually blue and gold. The lion faces right, a rare variation compared to the more common left-facing version, symbolizing peace rather than crusade.

  • The winged lion symbolizes Saint Mark, Venice’s patron saint, representing power and identity through its religious origins. It appears on the Italian Navy’s coat of arms, the Merchant Navy flag, and throughout Venice—most notably in Piazza San Marco.

The Outcome.

The final logo incorporates three iconic elements of Venice: the bridge, the gondola, and the winged lion—instantly making the city recognizable.

The choice of gold reflects the richness, elegance, and historic grandeur of Venice, often referred to as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The navy blue symbolizes the city's deep connection to water, representing the canals and rivers that flow through and define its unique character.
